Message from Garrett Shelton
The Decca Label Group
Senior Director, Marketing

“It goes without saying non-traditional approaches in the marketing of recorded music have become a necessity in the current marketplace. With the broad availability of “free” entertainment on the internet to the extraordinarily crowded media landscape, how one builds awareness and a profile for a musician and successfully monetizes their activity and artistic product is a daunting task. Decca Records recently signed Phil Roy, a Philadelphia-based singing songwriter, who has made a career out of doing the thing that never goes out of style but is still a rare talent: he writes good songs. One characteristic that makes Phil truly unique is that he thinks like a creative marketer. Over the past several months Decca and Phil have come up some some interesting angles on how to enter the marketplace with his new album, The Great Longing, but we also are not limiting the thought process to a mere record launch. For example, how can we explore and develop Phil’s relationship in culinary world (he counts James Beard Award Winner, Mark Vetri as a great friend) to make him unique in the music marketplace? How can we achieve great efficiency from our traditional marketing methods such as radio promotion and brick and mortar retail? Decca’s looking for interested MBA candidates to enter Phil’s musical world, help us develop some great ideas already on the table….and then afterwards, have a meal on that very same table.”
